Family court cases in Bengaluru, such as divorce, maintenance, custody and restitution petitions, are listed on the national eCourts system. You can check the family court case status yourself, for free, on the eCourts website or the eCourts Services app. You need either the CNR number or the case number with the year.
The Bengaluru Urban family courts sit at the Nyaya Degula building, according to the Bengaluru district court website. Cases from Bengaluru Rural district are listed under that district on eCourts.
What you need before you start
One of these:
- CNR number: a 16-character code for the case. Bengaluru court cases usually start with KABC. It is printed on the summons, notice or order copy, and your advocate has it.
- Case number and year: for example, M.C. (matrimonial case) number, G&WC (guardian and wards) number, or Crl.Misc number, with the year of filing.
- Party name: your name or the other side’s name, with the year, if you have nothing else.
Step 1: search by CNR number
- Open the eCourts services site: services.ecourts.gov.in.
- Choose CNR Number search.
- Enter the 16-character CNR without spaces or hyphens.
- Fill in the captcha and click Search.
You will see the case details, the court, the stage, the next hearing date and the history of earlier hearings.
Step 2: search by case number or party name
If you do not have the CNR:
- On the same site, open Case Status.
- Select State: Karnataka, District: Bengaluru (or Bengaluru Rural), and the court complex. Choose the family court complex from the list.
- Pick the search type: case number, party name, filing number or advocate name.
- For case number, select the case type (for example M.C.), enter the number and year.
- Enter the captcha and search.
The district court website, bengaluru.dcourts.gov.in, has the same case status search and a cause list option. Menu names on these sites change from time to time, so look for “Case Status” if a label is different.
Step 3: use the eCourts Services app
The eCourts Services app is available on Android and iPhone. You can search by CNR, case number or party name, and save the case under “My Cases”. Once saved, you can open it in one tap before each hearing instead of searching again.
What the status words mean
The exact words differ from court to court, but these are the stages you will usually see.
| You see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Next hearing date | The date the case is listed next. Check the cause list the day before. |
| Stage: Appearance / Notice | Summons sent to the other side. The court is waiting for them to appear. |
| Stage: Objections / Counter | The respondent is to file a reply. |
| Stage: Conciliation / Mediation | The case is referred to the counsellor or mediation centre. |
| Stage: Evidence | Parties are giving evidence in chief or being cross-examined. |
| Stage: Arguments | Evidence is over. Lawyers argue before the judgment. |
| Stage: Judgment / Orders | The court is to pronounce its decision. |
| Disposed | The case is over. Check the order for the result. |
In a mutual consent divorce, you may see the first motion recorded and the case posted for second motion after the waiting period. See mutual divorce in Bangalore for that timeline.
Check the cause list for the day
The cause list is the list of cases a court will take up on a given date. On eCourts or the district court site, open Cause List, select the court complex and the particular court (family court number), and choose the date. Your case number will appear with its serial number in the list. A case that does not appear has not been listed for that day.
Read and download orders
Under the case history, click on a hearing date to see the short order (called the daily order or proceedings). Final orders and judgments are usually uploaded as PDF files. For an attested copy that you can use elsewhere, apply for a certified copy at the court.
If the status looks wrong
The online status depends on court staff updating the record. If a date has passed and nothing changed, or the stage looks wrong, ask your advocate to check with the court office. Do not miss a hearing because the website did not update.
