Lawyer fees in Bangalore: how they are worked out

How lawyer fees are worked out in Bangalore for property verification, bail, criminal trials, cheque bounce and civil suits, plus court fees and the questions to ask.

Search “lawyer fees in Bangalore” and you will find tables with neat numbers. Be careful with them. A bail application in a simple case and one in a serious case are both “bail applications”, but they are not the same work.

What follows is how fees are usually structured for the matters we see most. Use it to understand and compare quotes, not as a price list.

A fee note, a receipt book and a calculator on an advocate’s desk Ask for the fee in writing, with court fees and other charges listed separately.

The four ways lawyers charge

  • Consultation fee. For the first meeting and an opinion on your facts.
  • Fixed fee. One amount for a defined piece of work, such as a title report or a bail application.
  • Stage-wise fee. A fee for each stage of a case: filing, evidence, arguments.
  • Appearance fee. A fee for each hearing the lawyer attends.

Court fees, stamp duty, notary charges, certified copies and travel are separate. Ask whether a quote includes them.

Property

Work How it is usually charged
Title and document verification Fixed fee per property. Older titles and revenue sites cost more.
Sale agreement and sale deed drafting Fixed fee, sometimes with attendance at registration
Khata transfer, EC and record corrections Fixed fee per application, plus government charges
Partition, injunction and title suits Stage-wise or per hearing

Of all the legal work people pay for, property verification gives the most protection for the money. The fee is small next to the price of the property. See our apartment document checklist for what a proper check covers.

Criminal and bail

Work How it is usually charged
Anticipatory or regular bail, Sessions Court Fixed fee per application
Bail before the High Court Higher fixed fee
Quashing petition before the High Court Fixed fee
Trial defence Stage-wise or per hearing

Urgency adds cost. A bail application that has to be drafted and filed the same evening involves more work than one prepared over a few days. The seriousness of the offence and the volume of the case papers also matter. More on bail in our anticipatory bail guide.

Cheque bounce

Work How it is usually charged
Legal notice under Section 138 Fixed fee
Reply to a notice Fixed fee
Filing and running the complaint Fixed fee to file, then per hearing or stage-wise
Defending a complaint Stage-wise or per hearing

There is also a court fee on the complaint itself. In Karnataka it depends on the cheque amount. Your lawyer should tell you the exact figure before filing. The full process is in what happens when a cheque bounces.

Civil suits

The court fee for a civil suit in Karnataka is calculated under the Karnataka Court-fees and Suits Valuation Act, usually on the value of the claim or property. In a money recovery suit or a property suit this can be a significant amount, so ask about it early. The advocate’s fee is usually stage-wise.

Why the same work can cost different amounts

  • Experience. Senior advocates charge more, and for some matters they are worth it.
  • Court. High Court work costs more than trial court work.
  • Volume. A case with three thousand pages of documents takes longer to prepare than one with thirty.
  • Urgency. Overnight work costs more.
  • Distance. Courts far from the lawyer’s office add travel time.

How to compare two quotes

Ask each lawyer the same questions: what is included, what is extra, who will appear on hearing dates, and what happens if the case settles early. Get both answers in writing. The cheaper quote is sometimes the one that leaves out half the work.
